The oldest running Cricket club in Tasmania.

The Derwent Cricket Club

We are Tasmania's oldest running Cricket club. Established in 1835 our ground is Clare Street Oval in Newtown, Hobart, Tasmania.

According to the book "The History of Tasmanian Cricket" by Roger Page, organised cricket was born on October 27 1832. This was the Hobart Town Cricket Club. John Marshall was captain and they had their own cricket ground on the site of the old Hobart Railway station.

An unknown issue split the club into two factions and several members including Marshall, seceded and on February 14, 1835, "unanimously resolved we shall be designated the Derwent Cricket Club". The following day Derwent defeated the Hobart Town Club in a grudge match...'
